• Basketry Now 2025

    Textile Center is pleased to present Basketry Now 2025, a biennial juried exhibition, in partnership with the National Basketry Organization. The artworks that have been selected are a showcase of some of the best in basketry from across the country and include entries from as far away as the UK, Italy, and Australia. Juror Gyöngy Laky.

    Instructors Heidi Leuszler and Ann Coddington will begin by discussing the ancient methods of making rope, then lead the class on a walk to gather dried materials. After looking at fibers through a microscope, students will learn how to make cordage out of different materials and how to weave a basic structure.

    In this busy five-day workshop, I will introduce the off-loom weaving technique of twining as a method of creating contemporary sculptural woven forms. We will utilize both waxed linen as well as reed and will cover several different ways of starting pieces. I will teach you how to turn, split and join forms, giving you lots of methods for inventing your own shapes. Most of all, we will have fun creating new forms with this pre-historic basketry technique.
